NWC cracks down on illegal water connections in Clarendon
A hidden web of illegal water connections tucked away in the bushes of Palmetto Pen and Cross Pen, Clarendon, has been dismantled by the National Water Commission in a major crackdown aimed at protecting paying customers.
In a joint operation dubbed Operation Clean Sweep, the NWC's Revenue Recovery Team, working alongside members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, swooped down on the area and removed hundreds of feet of unauthorised piping that had been siphoning water from the system.
According to the NWC, the team pulled up 260 feet of one inch and 300 feet of three quarter inch polyethylene flex pipes, along with 20 lengths of PVC pipes that were being used to facilitate the illegal connections.
The Commission said the unauthorised hook ups had been affecting the Palmetto Pen network, creating distribution problems and disrupting service delivery to legitimate customers.
"Illegal connections are nothing new, but we are taking a firm stance against them," the NWC stated. "This not only affects our revenue but also impacts the quality of service we can provide to our legitimate customers. We are committed to tackling this issue head on."
The NWC is now urging residents with unauthorised connections to come forward and regularise their water supply. The agency is offering support to those willing to switch to legal connections.
