Petrojam warns public to beware of online scam
State-owned petroleum refinery company Petrojam is warning the public to be on high alert for a scam circulating on social media under the name "Petrojam Profit", which promises persons $50,000 daily for a one-time investment.
According to the company, the scheme promises victims the large cash sum in exchange for a minimum participation amount of $40,000.
The scammers behind the operation are also requesting personal data such as names, email addresses, and phone numbers from their victims.
The fraudsters have reportedly set up a fake web page using recognisable logos, including CNN's, to make the scam appear more credible. However, Petrojam says that a closer look at the web address will reveal it is fraudulent.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force says they are also aware of the scheme and assures the public the content of the articles are fales.
Petrojam describes the scheme as a "fictitious and potentially dangerous online investment." The company noted, "While most people can easily spot this scam, some persons may fall victim to it. Besides losing your money, the scammers could also gain access to personal information and passwords on your device."
The refinery is urging everyone to practice proper internet safety protocols and verify the legitimacy of online offers. "If the offer is too good to be true, then it probably is!" the company stressed.
